David loved Cindy and was loved in return. Or so he thought. The troubled young man clung to his new love and dreamed of their future together. So begins the chain of events that was to evolve into a horror of terrifying proportions. Jack Olsen, best-selling author of Son, now reveals the details of a true-life romance gone hideously awry.
After weeks of planning, the young misfits from two fine old Texas families donned grotesque battle gear and crept into the luxurious home where Cindy Ray's parents lay asleep with her two small sons. In the hot muggy room, the "cold kill" was over in seconds.
Everyone who knew the unpredictable Cindy suspected that she was involved, but the ghastly crime had been so carefully orchestrated that Houston's top homicide detectives could get nowhere. Cindy wore black and sobbed at the funeral, then began a frenzied attempt to collect her inheritance and as many of her wealthy parents possessions as she could haul away. No one except David West was surprised when she walked out on him.
Then the story took another bizarre turn. In a final bid to solve the case, a seductive young private investigator was assigned to cozy up to West. Soon the gullible killer was in love, once again with fateful consequences.
Traditionally, true-crime drama illuminates the sinister motivations in the human psyche. Yet Cold Kill reveals something still more frightful - unspeakable murders are committed, not out of greed, revenge, or blind demented rage, but out of a troubled young man's tragically misconceived code of honor and a desperate need to please and protect the woman of his dreams.
Jack Olsen's Cold Kill is a stunning testament to the profoundly discerning eye of a grand master of true crime. To listen to Cold Kill is not to forgive David West. It is, however, to undergo the uncanny experience of feeling oneself slowly but surely moving into the shoes of a pathological killer.

Had David West never met Cindy Ray, he'd probably living out his life in the Montrose dreaming of all the women who got away. Cindy Ray was a classic train wreck. Crazy! I don't believe she was ever abused, sexually or physically. She was a pathological liar and oh so many other things, all of them evil. This is an outstanding book, written as only the late great Jack Olsen could write. I literally could not put it down once I opened the book. I've yet to read an Olsen book that wasn't A+++!Product details

Cold Kill The True Story of a Murderous Love (Audible Audio Edition) Jack Olsen Kevin Pierce LLC Jack Olsen Literary Works Books Reviews
After reading all of this author's, even though I thought it was better written than lots of true crime, it was just my least favorite of all his books. It took me longer to read because I lost interest, too long to tell the story.
I can't believe I finished this book. Should have skipped about 250 pages and read the last 4 pages. Would not have missed much except more imaginary dialog. Much of the book was about the thoughts of the characters. Really, the characters were able to vividly remember their thoughts and words so accurately! It was soooo repetitive and the detailed descriptions on the characters was laughable.
The abrupt ending made it seem as if the author just got tired and said, "Ok, that's enough". (Finally)
The typos...OMG!!!
Who are the people who rated the book with 4 or 5 stars. Is this the first book you read without pictures. Come on!
If I ever read another book by this author...Soot me!
Good and fast moving crime. That one very gullible man could buy the lies of one very evil woman and commit such a horrific crime is beyond comprehension. He pulled the trigger but without a doubt, her evil, narcissistic ,lying manipulation provided motive as well as the pressure to kill. It was a sick , dependency love that spiraled into a murder not even human. Hope they both rot in jail and especially her.
Amazing in its intimate detail of the people involved and how it draws the reader in. Riveting storytelling of this crime and the way it was solved. Needed proofing, but still worth 5 stars.
What's even more terrifying than the story is the editing. Had the story not been what it was, I would have quit, due to the horrendous editing!! And if that wasn't bad enough, the ending is ridiculous! It's like the author got bored or was not going to make his deadline and just stopped. I am so disappointed, as every other book I have read by this author was excellent -(
The story is interesting but the editing is terrible. Several times whole sections of sentences are repeated. Words are constantly misspelled . Several words have no meanings. Someone needs to at least edit the electronic copy before publication. I don't think it has been edited at all. It really diminishes the quality of an otherwise good read.
If there is one thing consistent with true crime books, it's that there usually aren't many likable characters. That is true about this story except for one private detective named Kim Paris, who wrangled herself into the life of a killer.
David West is an ex-Marine who described himself as having two personalities. There was the kind, thoughtful, and caring David. Then there was David the soldier willing to take on anyone who got in his way. I'll call him loser one.
Loser two is Cindy Ray Campbell. She is overweight, dependent on others for her survival, and has zero ambition. She is in her mid-twenties but has never had a driver's license. She has never held a real job.
When David first meets Cindy Ray, he see's potential behind that shy, unkempt exterior. He encourages her to lose weight. He helps bring out her best qualities. He turns the ugly duckling into a swan. But Cindy has issues beyond her physical appearance. She claims to be the victim of incest and rape by her father.
A lot of time is spent getting to know the backgrounds of these two losers. They are both so unlikable that it is hard to keep reading about their twisted relationship. But when Cindy Ray comes up with the idea to kill both her parents to receive an inheritance, things kick into high gear.
Cindy is first to slip up. David does so reluctantly after falling for the seductive Kim Paris. In the end, they both get what they deserve.
My only issue with the book was the author's decision to get inside the minds of his characters. Yes, it adds depth to the story, but it also crosses the line as a work of nonfiction. Even if the author spent hours talking to each individual, there's no way that he could know what someone is thinking all the time. I would also have liked some images of the people involved in this story. Lastly, the author never divulges whether or not Cindy's claims of rape and incest were true. She had a child that was supposedly fathered by her father. I would have thought that a paternity test would have put the matter to rest.
